AFFENPINSCHER Fact File

Original Function:  Vermin and rabbit hunter.
Modern Function: Companion
Appearance: Rough haired, small and compact with a monkey-like expression.
Weight/Height: 25 to 30cm; 4 to 6 kg
Coat Colours/Texture: The head is typically adorned by bushy, bristly eyebrows and wreathlike hair surrounding the eyes, by an impressive beard, by the top knot and by the hair on the cheeks. The coat on the head should be hard, straggly and sticking out. Colour: Pure black with black undercoat.
Grooming: To keep up the shaggy nevertheless neat look, brush weekly with a small slicker brush, then comb with a metallic comb. Coat should be stripped. Brush teeth daily.
Character/Temperament: Fearless, alert, persistent and devoted, sometimes full of quick-tempered passion. He is an agreeable family dog in all aspects
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Needs to be socialized
Compatibility with people/children: The Affenpinscher is comfortable being a house dog, their primary concern is companionship.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for exercise.
Exercise/Training: Responds well to training and socialization although they'll remain suspicious of strangers and protective of their pack making them useful as a watchdog, where it will bark to raise attention.
Longevity/Health: Up to 14 years. Occur sometimes: patella luxation, hip dysplasia, Legg-Calve Perthes disease (LCPD), cataracts, cardiac problems, hypothyroidism.
