Original Function: Scenthound - Hunting by scent.
Modern Function: Companion
Appearance: Sturdy bone structure, body that is only slightly longer than it is tall at the withers, short-legged hunting dog of the hound type. Solid dogs that appear rough and unrefined yet casual.
Weight/Height: PBGV: 32-40cm, 15-20kg. GBV: 39-44cm, 18-22kg
Coat Colours/Texture: PBGV: Rough medium length hair, white with any combination of lemon, orange, black, tri-colour or grizzle markings
GBV: Hair hard, not too long and flat, never silky or woolly. White, with any combination of lemon, orange, sable, grizzle or black markings. Tricolour. Black and tan.
Grooming: Known for it's tousled, unkempt appearance.They need to be brushed regularly, but not daily, to avoid matting and tangles. To keep the coat well groomed it should be occasionally stripped. They need regular ear cleanings to prevent yeast infections and clipping of the claws is normally needed once or twice a month.
Character/Temperament: Extroverted, friendly, and independent. Tirelessly wagging tails and expressive, intelligent eyes. Active and lively. They are pack dogs, so owners should either spend a lot of time with them or get a second dog or a cat.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Pet-friendly breed - get on well with cats too.They are quite noisy dogs, ‘talking’ to other dogs with a howl and bark.
Compatibility with people/children: Great with children, friendly, social, outgoing. Stubborn and should be trained and socialized so that he is well mannered around people.
Indoors/Outdoors: Indoors but needs outdoors excercise.
Exercise/Training: A bit stubborn so training requires patience. They can excel in agility, obedience. Need a securely fenced-in area for exercise, since these hunting dogs cannot resist the urge to chase
Longevity/Health: Up to 14 years. Occur sometimes: Eyes,hips, elbows, cardiac, epilepsy.
