Basset Hound Fact File

Original Function:  Hunting dog to trail hare, rabbits and deer
Modern Function: Companion
Appearance: Stocky, short-legged, low-slung with a large, domed head, very long, velvety ears, mournful eyes, and a wrinkled brow.
Weight/Height: 28 to 38cm; 20-34kg
Coat Colours/Texture: Tricolour (black, white and tan) or tan/lemon and white (bi-color); Any recognized hound color acceptable. Coat smooth, short and lying close tot the skin.
Grooming: Weekly brush and occasional bathing. The loose skin on body and the ears should be cleaned regularly. Sheds twice a year, requiring daily brushing in this time. Some owners choose a "snood" to protect the ears.
Character/Temperament: Calm, laid-back temperament. Generally refuses to do anything quickly.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Usually friendly.
Compatibility with people/children: Friendly with people.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for a bit of exercise.
Exercise/Training: Bred to follow a scent single-mindedly, blocking out all distractions, they are highly alert and independent, even reluctant to take instruction (interpreted as stubborn). They can be trained with patience. Daily walks will keep them happy.
Longevity/Health: Up to 11 years. Occur sometimes: Ear infections, bloat (GDV), hipdysplasia, elbowdysplasia, eyelid abnormalities, skin infections in poorly maintained coat, obesity
