Original Function: Herding sheep, cattle drover
Modern Function: Family companion
Appearance: Lean, active dog with long draping coat. Bright, enquiring expression is a distinctive feature.
Weight/Height: Dogs: 53 - 56 cms; Bitches: 51 - 53 cms.
Coat Colours/Texture: Slate grey, reddish-fawn, black, blue, all shades of grey, brown and sandy with or without white markings. Never merle/dapple.Double coat with soft, furry and close undercoat. Outer coat flat, harsh, strong and shaggy. From cheeks, lower lips and under chin, coat increases in length towards chest, forming typical beard.
Grooming: High maintenance grooming, shedding minimal.
Character/Temperament: Not a guard dog, but will give a good bark.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Generally very good.
Compatibility with people/children: Very compatible.
Indoors/Outdoors: Beardies enjoy daytime exercise and play but are happiest when they are with their owners so need to sleep indoors.
Exercise/Training: Needs exercise and stimulation or will become bored.
Longevity/Health: 13years; Occur sometimes: Hip dysplasia; autoimmune diseases; Collie Eye Analomy (CEA)
