Original Function: Farm dog for guarding and protecting.
Modern Function:Guarding, protection and companionship.
Appearance: The Boerboel is a large dog. It has prominent and well-developed musculature over the entire body with buoyant movement – an impressive and imposing figure of strength.
Weight/Height: 61 to 66cm; 50 to 80 kg
Coat Colours/Texture: All shades of yellow, brown or brindle.Short and thick hair – dense pelt.
Grooming: Demands little attention, apart from normal parasite control.
Character/Temperament: Obedient and manageable, reliable, watchful, self-confident.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Good when socialized, but alpha dominance amongst same sex dogs may play a factor.
Compatibility with people/children: Good when socialized and children are well taught.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for exercise.
Exercise/Training: Reacts well to owner’s instructions. Training advised.Can be very dominant and require correct rearing and training. Can live happily in a smaller environment, but needs lots of exercise wherever it lives.
Longevity/Health: Up to 12 years. Occur sometimes: Hip dysplasia; elbow dysplasia, Eye problems including entropion and ectropion; vaginal hyperplasia; cruciate ligament ruptures. Large breeds can be susceptible to bloat.
