Original Function: Hunter - small bears & deer of China/Tibet, temple guard
Modern Function: Companion, guard dog
Appearance: Powerful, square build with scowling oriental expression, blue tongue and unique pendulum gait.
Weight/Height: 46 to 56cm; 25-35 kg
Coat Colours/Texture: Black, Red, Cream, Blue & Fawn (also called Cinnamon). Coarse long straight outer guard hair and soft woolly undercoat. Rough (long hair) or smooth (short hair). Spotted, marked coats, brindle and merle not part of breed history and not allowed. Chocolate not allowed as it cannot have hallmark dark tongue/pigmentation.
Grooming: Weekly thorough brush down to the skin, do not bath too often. During shedding weeks brush more often.
Character/Temperament: Aloof, regal, wary of strangers, devoted and loving to it's own. Strong, independent mind.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Needs to be socialized
Compatibility with people/children: Very good with well-taught children when well socialised. Wary of all strangers.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for exercise.
Exercise/Training: Moderate exercise - some can be very active. Training takes patience as they are an ancient breed and do not often see the need to please/obey.
Longevity/Health: Up to 8-14 years.Breeders should test for patella luxation, hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, entropion.
