Origin: Scotland - Valley of the river Clyde. 1970's: Rare Breeds Survival Trust considers the breed vulnerable to extinction. Numbers have since increased slightly.
Characteristics: Large, powerful, broad head, long neck, feathering on legs, high stepping gait. Calm, gentle temperament.
Weight/Height: 16 to 18 hands (162 to 182 cm), 750kg - 850kg
Colors: Bay, black, grey, chestnut - solid or roan or spots. White blazes or bald facial markings can happen.
Activities: Agricultural work, draughting, riding, fairs, exhibitions.
Health: 25-30 years. Chronic progressive lymphedema (swelling in the leg). Skin infections under their thick leg hair if not properly maintained. Regular grooming required.
