Original Function: Herding cattle and sheep.
Modern Function: Companion
Appearance: Foxy, stubby-legged, cute little dog with large ears.
Pembroke: No tail (Most are born this way)
Cardigan: Tails with fox-like brushes

Dogs: 10-12kg; Bitches: 9-11kg
Cardigans: approximately 17kg

Coat Colours/Texture: Double coated with thicker undercoat.
Cardigans: any
shade of red, sable or brindle, as well as being black, gray, blue-merle, or marbled
with bits of white.
Pembrokes: red,
sable, fawn, black and tan with bits of white.
Grooming: Double coated breed. They do shed and need to be brushed thoroughly in shedding seasons otherwise at least once a week.
Character/Temperament: Loving, friendly, loyal, and intelligent members of the family who
want to watch TV with you. They are endearing dogs which bond
closely with their owners.They have an acute hearing that
helps them detect unfamiliar noises and are good watchdogs.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Very good
Compatibility with people/children: Very good.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for exercise.
Exercise/Training: Responds well to training but some need firm obedience training and can be very stubborn. Needs moderate exercise particularly to prevent obesity.
Longevity/Health: Up to 15 years.
Pembrokes: Occur sometimes: Hip dysplasia (HD). Obesity, though not hereditary is a big problem in the
breed. Cancer is a growing problem.
Cardigans: Occur sometimes: HD; intervertebral disc disease; urolithiasis and ophthalmic disorders including progressive retinal atrophy.
