Original Function:  The English Bulldog was originally developed for bull-baiting, bear-baiting and dog fighting.
Modern Function: Companion
Appearance: Smooth-coated, fairly thick set, rather low in stature, broad, powerful and compact. Head, fairly large in proportion to size. Face relatively short, muzzle broad, blunt and inclined upwards although not excessively so. Body fairly short, well knit, limbs stout, well-muscled.
Weight/Height: Males: 25kg / 35-40cm, Females: 23kg / 30-35cm.
Coat Colours/Texture: Fine texture, short, smooth. Whole or smut, (i.e. whole colour with black mask or muzzle). Only whole colours (which should be brilliant and pure of their sort) viz., brindles, reds with their various shades, fawns, fallows etc., white and pied (i.e. combination of white with any of the foregoing colours). Dudley, black and black with tan highly undesirable.
Grooming: Moderate shedders, require little grooming. Wrinkles on the face should be wiped regularly to prevent skin infections..
Character/Temperament: Alert, bold, loyal, dependable, courageous, fierce in appearance, but very loving.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Good with their own.
Compatibility with people/children: Tolerant and patient, good with children.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for a little bit of exercise.
Exercise/Training:Typically low-endurance dogs, they need only a moderate amount of exercise. They thrive best in temperate climates; they readily overheat and have breathing difficulties in hot weather, and they chill easily in cold temperatures..
Longevity/Health: 8-12 years. Occur sometimes: Brachycephalic Syndrome (respiratory problems), hip and elbow dysplasia, luxating patella (dislocating kneecap), pelvic deformities, intervertebral disk disease, posterior cruciate ligament rupture and degenerative spine disease, skin and ear infections, dry eye, cherry eye, entropion, ectropion.
