Original Function: Gundog: Find and point upland game, retrieve waterfowl, track furred game and running birds
Modern Function: Companion, gundog
Appearance: Medium sized, noble, steady dog showing power, endurance and speed, attentive expression full of energy. Either in short coat or wirehaired coat.
Weight/Height: Shorthair: 53-64cm; 20-32kg Wirehair: 57-68cm; 27-32kg
Coat Colours/Texture:
Shorthair: Short, flat, coarse - slightly longer under the tail. Solid liver, liver and white spotted, liver and white spotted and ticked, liver and white ticked, solid black or black and white, same variations (not tri-colour).
Wirehair: Wirehaired, harsh, flat lying and dense. Brown roan with or without patches. Black roan, with or without patches. Brown with or without white chest patch. Light roan.
Grooming: Bath only when necessary. Shorthair: Weekly wipedown with hound glove or soft bristle brush. Wirehair: Weekly brush with soft slicker brush and comb through beard and eyebrows.
Character/Temperament: Gentle, affectionate and even-tempered. Alert, biddable, loyal. Energetic with great power, endurance and speed.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Needs to be socialized. May see smaller animals as prey due to hunting instinct.
Compatibility with people/children: Very good family dog but care needs to be taken around small children due to the energetic nature of the pointers.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors, but must have a lot of outdoors exercise.
Exercise/Training: Easy to train and excels at variety of dog sport. Start training young and provide enough stimulation or they can become bored and destructive. High energy dog that needs active owners.
Longevity/Health: Up to 14 years. Sometimes heart disease, eye conditions, hipdysplasia, elbow dysplasia, Cone Degeneration (German Shorthaired Pointer) (CD), bloat.
