Original Function: Gundog - tracking, pointing, retrieving
Modern Function: Companion, gundog
Appearance: Large, square bodied dog of solid construction, robust and vigorous with powerful bone, well-developed muscles and with a rough coat.
Weight/Height: 58-70cm; 28-37kg
Coat Colours/Texture: Hair harsh, thick and flat. solid white, white with brown or orange markings, or brown or orange roan
Grooming: Weekly brush and hand stripping of dead hair, ears cleaned regularly.
Character/Temperament: Naturally sociable, docile and patient, fearless of terrain, endurance and an excellent retriever.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Gets on well with other dogs. Needs to be socialized with cats and small animals.
Compatibility with people/children: Excellent
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors, but needs outdoors for exercise.
Exercise/Training: Gentle but stubborn, it needs patience and needs to see a reason to obey. Independent thinker. Needs only moderate exercise.
Longevity/Health: Up to 14 years. Sometimes hipdysplasia, elbow dysplasia, eyelid conditions, bloat, ear infections.
