Original Function: Rat and vermin control; also fighting dogs.
Modern Function: Loyal family companion & protector.
Appearance: Well built, solid, muscular, alert, strong. Egg-shaped head. Maximum power packed into medium frame..
Weight/Height: 20-35kg / 51-61cm
Grooming:Minimal – quick brush daily. Bath only when necessary.
Character/Temperament: Outgoing, friendly, fearless, clown-like, crafty, loyal. Can be obstinate.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Dogs: Depends on upbringing and socialization. Usually fine with initial supervision but care must be taken with dominant personalities – strong discipline may be required. Cats etc: Depends on upbringing – easier if introduced as puppies/kittens with necessary discipline. Strict initial supervision. Individuals may be incompatible.
Compatibility with people/children:Bull Terriers are ‘people dogs’ and crave human affection. They enjoy a joke at owners’ expense. Love children – ‘the best’ with kids.
Indoors/Outdoors: Not for small yards or flats; not a kennel or back-yard dog. Bull Terriers like exercise, but enjoy comfort and prefer to be indoors, on the couch.
Exercise/Training: Do not require great space but enjoy daily exercise. Young dogs need suitable exercise and walks to develop muscle tone. Handler usually needs a lot of patience – most successful if tit-bit involved!
Longevity/Health: 10 – 12 years. Deafness, skin problems, obsessive compulsive behaviour, Bull Terrier kidney disease, heart problems, hereditary zinc deficiency, and patellar luxation.
