Modern Function: Companion
Appearance: Compact, smooth-coated dog, vigorous and alert. Characteristic traits are their hackney style movement, fearless animation, complete self-possession, and spirited presence.
Weight/Height: 25 to 30cm; 4 to 6 kg
Coat Colours/Texture: Black & Tan, Blue & Tan, Chocolate & Tan, Red (various shades). Straight, smooth, hard short hair, shiny.
Grooming: Soft bristle brush or hound glove once a week.
Character/Temperament: Fearless, alert, independent, active, wary of strangers.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Needs to be socialized. Can be dominant with dogs.
Compatibility with people/children: Good. Not for small children as the dog is too delicate for potentially rough play.
Indoors/Outdoors: Family dog - indoors primarily, but enjoys outdoors for exercise.
Exercise/Training: Train well but may require patience due to independent nature. Active and require fair amount of exercise. Make sure property well secured - escape artists.
Longevity/Health: Up to 14 years. Sometimes there is patella luxation, Legg-Calve Perthes disease (LCPD), PRA, thyroid, epilepsy
