Original Function: Herding sheep, working and draught dog
Modern Function: Family companion, protector
Appearance: An elegant medium-size, medium-boned dog with erect ears. Snow white coat and black points. Well-balanced, square-shaped. Long or short double coat.
Weight/Height: Dogs: 30-40 kg / 60-66cm; Bitches: 25 – 35 kg / 55-61cm
Coat Colours/Texture: White. Slight deer colour (light yellow or fawny shading) on eartips, back and upperside of the tail is a ‘minor fault’ in the standard. Short or long coat with abundant undercoat.
Grooming: Regular brushing and grooming, particularly when shedding.
Character/Temperament: Gentle, loyal, alert, keen learner, lively. Should not be nervous or aggressive, but may be aloof towards strangers.
Compatibility with other animals/cats: Very compatible - if socialized from a young age and raised with them, they get on with all other animals.
Compatibility with people/children: Very compatible, but must be socialized from an early age to ensure that natural aloofness with strangers does not turn to shyness. The WSSD has a natural affinity for children.
Indoors/Outdoors: Both – like most dogs, shedding hair will be more noticeable indoors.
Exercise/Training: Fair space is required outdoors for free exercise – even if kept in an average garden, they should be taken for regular walks and runs. Very keen learner and wants to please owners.
Longevity/Health: 10 – 15 years;
Very good - generally very healthy.
